Conestoga Cold Storage

Early fire detection for deep-freeze warehouses

Conestoga Cold Storage Ltd. is a family-owned company founded in 1974 that specializes in the storage and distribution of frozen foods. The company operates automated warehousing and distribution centers across Canada, with locations in Kitchener, Mississauga, Halton Hills, Vaudreuil, Dorval and Calgary. With 2.4 million cubic meters of refrigerated space, Conestoga provides logistics services for a wide range of frozen goods.

Ensuring fire protection in deep-freeze environments presents unique challenges. In 2012, Conestoga decided to standardize on WAGNER’s aspirating smoke detection (ASD) technology to improve fire safety throughout its facilities.

RISK ANALYSIS

Fire hazards in deep-freeze warehouses

Deep-freeze warehouses present unique fire hazards, particularly from electrical failures in automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and mechanical incidents during product handling. The low temperatures can also interfere with conventional fire detection methods. Early detection is critical to preventing fire spread and minimizing damage.

PROTECTION GOALS

Ensuring maximum safety in cold storage

  • Early smoke detection for rapid hazard identification
  • Reliable detection with minimal false alarms
  • Protection from fire damage and contamination

SOLUTION

Reliable fire protection for cold storage

Conestoga Cold Storage relies on TITANUS® aspirating smoke detection (ASD) systems to ensure early fire detection in their deep-freeze warehouses. The system effectively mitigates risks such as electrical faults in automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) and fire hazards from product handling.

Designed for low-temperature environments, TITANUS TOP·SENS® provides highly sensitive smoke detection, minimal maintenance, and reliable performance. It is seamlessly integrated with Conestoga’s pre-action/double interlock sprinkler system, exceeding NFPA 13 requirements.
