Highly efficient automated compact storage systems such as the Autostore system from the manufacturer of the same name or the PowerCube from Jungheinrich use stackable container systems, which usually have robot-supported container handling for picking. The compact storage systems have become an integral part of today's intralogistics, as they optimally fulfill the requirements that arise for companies from e-commerce and click & collect, for example.
These storage systems place particular demands on fire protection systems, as the compact design and high-density storage make accessibility for targeted firefighting difficult in the event of a fire. This can result in business interruptions, impaired delivery capability and even endanger the existence of the operator. It is therefore essential to reduce the risk of fire in compact storage systems. At WAGNER, we rely on the principle of active fire prevention.
RISK ANALYSIS
There are unique fire risks in an automated compact storage system. For example, the use of stackable containers leads to encapsulated volume and an extremely high packing density with increasing value concentration due to the special type of storage. This requires a fire protection solution tailored to the risk. Other fire risks to be considered include the high degree of automation with a large number of electrical components, as well as the charging infrastructure and the use of lithium-ion batteries. Stored goods and materials such as small load carriers made of plastic, and other packaging materials like cardboard or plastic, but also the type of stored goods (highly flammable or self-igniting) have a high fire load.
PROTECTION GOALS
Define your specific protection goals:
BETTER SOLUTIONS IN FIRE PROTECTION
The compact design of an automated compact storage system makes targeted firefighting difficult. Conventional extinguishing systems and agents, such as water-based extinguishing agents, are therefore unable to achieve the protection goals of many operators. They do not achieve a sufficient extinguishing effect. By creating a protective atmosphere that prevents the uncontrolled spread of fire, the storage system can be effectively protected.
Our active fire prevention system OxyReduct® prevents the spread of fires and thus protects against fire-related loss of goods and business interruptions. An airtight enclosure ensures that the oxygen content in the area to be protected is permanently lowered and can be kept at this level in a controlled manner. This is achieved by introducing nitrogen, which is generated on-site from the ambient air as required. A protective atmosphere is thus created in the designated area under defined conditions, which prevents the development and uncontrolled spread of a fire within the compact storage system.
As the risk of short circuits and cable smoldering fires cannot be completely ruled out, even in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere, our highly sensitive TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors are always part of a holistic fire protection solution. They detect the finest fire particles at the earliest possible stage, without false alarms, so that countermeasures can be initiated in good time.
