Since 2020, fire protection from WAGNER has been protecting the automated compact storage system at the new headquarters of Elektro Material AG (EM) in Zurich. The OxyReduct® oxygen reduction system is used because of the tight storage. In addition, fire protection expert WAGNER and EM rely on early fire detection due to the automated processes in the closed storage system. The SES guidelines have been met.
At the heart of the new state-of-the-art warehouse is an automated compact storage system. The storage system is connected to the goods receiving area via a specially designed conveyor line. The empty totes can then be loaded directly with newly stored goods before being automatically returned to the compact container warehouse. The automated compact storage system is linked to several workstations to ensure smooth and efficient order picking. Innovative fire protection technology from WAGNER ensures the operational continuity of the compact storage systems.
The previous company headquarters, including the Zurich branch and the EM Lighting Competence Center, no longer met the requirements in terms of size, storage space, delivery points and transport connections, a new, future-oriented company location was built in Zurich under the project name "movEM". The move was planned for January 1, 2021. In addition to the compact storage system, the new headquarters also houses a long-bar warehouse as well as cable and pallet warehouses.
Elektro Material AG is a Swiss electrical wholesaler. The company stocks around 250,000 quality products ranging from lighting, switches and plugs to smart homes and photovoltaics.
RISK ANALYSIS
The compact design prevents targeted firefighting with conventional extinguishing agents. Due to the tight storage, a fire can easily spread to neighboring containers. The high level of automation and the large number of electrical cables pose a risk of short circuits. There is also a risk that in the event of a fire, the small plastic parts bins will drip downwards as they burn, contributing to the spread of the fire.

With our fire protection solution consisting of OxyReduct® active fire prevention and TITANUS® early fire detection, the automated compact storage systems of Elektro Material AG, including the small parts stored therein, is optimally protected.
Our OxyReduct® system works on the principle of oxygen reduction: by introducing nitrogen into the area to be protected, the oxygen content is reduced to a pre-defined level, creating a protective atmosphere that eliminates the risk of fire spread under defined conditions.
Due to the high degree of automation, there is always a risk of short circuits, even in an oxygen-reduced environment. In order to detect such an event and possible fire sources in time, we provide early fire detection with our TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors. They actively and continuously sample the air and detect a fire 2000 times earlier than conventional smoke detectors.
