Kunstmuseum Basel

Fire protection for valuable artifacts

The Kunstmuseum Basel (Basel Art Museum) is one of the most renowned museums of its kind in the world. Its world-famous collection, the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel (Public Art Collection Basel), comprises over 300,000 works spanning eight centuries, from the late Middle Ages to the present day. The core collection, the Amerbach Cabinet with its treasures of 15th and 16th century art, was purchased by the city in 1661, transferred to the university property and made accessible to the public. The city of Basel thus owns the oldest public art collection in the world.

The works of art in the current exhibitions and those in the archives and storage rooms must be protected from negative external influences, damage and destruction. In order to reliably protect the valuable artifacts from fire, the museum relies on integrated fire protection solutions from WAGNER for its new building.

RISK ANALYSIS

Challenge: Irretrievable assets and high fire load

The works of art stored in the protected areas represent irretrievable assets. The fire loads are high due to the primarily predominant materials wood, paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and packaging material.

PROTECTIVE GOALS

Active fire protection for valuable artifacts

  • Preservation of inestimable works of art
  • Avoidance of the loss of cultural and historical heritage
  • Protection of buildings, furniture and material assets
  • Avoidance of operational failures

Fire detection and prevention for optimum safety

The TITANUS® aspirating smoke detector system is used to ensure the protection of valuable artifacts as well as the building and its furnishings. It uses active smoke aspiration to detect a fire as soon as it starts, 2,000 times earlier than conventional point detectors - giving you more time to initiate countermeasures at an early stage.

The archive is equipped with the OxyReduct® oxygen reduction system to prevent a fire from starting or to immediately stop it spreading if a fire does start. The system generates nitrogen from the ambient air and directs it into the protected area, reducing the oxygen concentration there to 13.2 % - 13.4 %. The protective atmosphere generated in this way reduces the risk of a fire spreading to a minimum. Fire damage is avoided this way. Consequential damage, such as that caused by water or smoke contamination if extinguishing is necessary, can be eliminated. The fire protection solution from WAGNER secures a total of 5 areas in the Kunstmuseum Basel, with volumes ranging from 100 m3 and 1,750 m3 - and thus numerous works of art of the national and international heritage.
