In 2019, WAGNER equipped the newly installed automated compact storage system of KESSEL SE + Co KG in the existing building at the main production and storage site in Lenting with an OxyReduct® system for active fire prevention.
Safety is a top priority for drainage specialist KESSEL. This is why the compact storage system was secured with an effective fire protection solution: no classic sprinklers were installed, which would protect the storage system from fire damage but would damage the stored products with the extinguishing water. Instead, a special fire protection solution with early fire detection and active fire prevention through oxygen reduction is used in the compact storage system.
In order to make logistics capacities more efficient and flexible for customers, KESSEL SE + Co. KG is relying on fully automated logistics processes as part of an expansion and centralization at its headquarters. In addition to an automated transport system (KATE), an automated compact storage system was put into operation.
With over 600 employees, KESSEL SE + Co KG is the market leader in Germany and an international premium supplier of drainage technology. The product range includes system solutions, from wastewater drainage and cleaning to backwater protection for buildings.
RISK ANALYSIS
The high degree of automation with a large number of electrical cables harbors the risk of unnoticed short circuits. The dense storage and installation of the containers also facilitates the rapid and unhindered spread of fire. Small parts packed in cardboard boxes and stored in plastic containers also contribute to the spread of fire.
PROTECTION GOALS
SOLUTION
KESSEL SE + Co KG relies on OxyReduct® active fire prevention in the compact storage system in combination with aspirating smoke detectors for early fire detection.
The OxyReduct® oxygen reduction system reduces the oxygen content in the compact storage system area by introducing nitrogen to a predefined protection level that is below the ignition threshold of the critical materials (in this case cardboard packaging). Under these defined conditions, the development of a fire is prevented.
TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors are also used. These smoke detectors actively take air samples from the ambient air of the enclosed storage system, analyze them optically and thus detect smoke particles 2,000 times more sensitively than conventional fire detectors – a considerable and important time advantage in the automated warehouse.
CUSTOMER BENEFITS
The supply chain is not jeopardized thanks to the holistic fire protection solution. Just-in-time deliveries can be completed within terms of fire protection.
The fire protection systems are installed outside the warehouse and therefore do not require any space in the protected area itself.
WAGNER's fire protection systems are VdS-tested, certified and tried and tested.
Active fire prevention by means of oxygen reduction generally results in no consequential fire-related damage to goods, warehouse or nature.
CUSTOMER VOICE
"Seats of the fire in high-bay racking often lead to the warehouse being completely destroyed. That's why it was particularly important for us here to prevent the fire from starting or spreading in the first place."
We specialize in developing holistic fire protection solutions based on your protection goals and the specific risks in your warehouse. We look forward to getting in touch with you.
