Rolling stock

Safe on the rails: Fire protection for rolling stock

There are numerous areas of application for fire protection solutions in rail transportation. Different train models and types entail a variety of special features and requirements. In addition, the fire risks, particularly from electrical systems, switchgear and engine rooms with electric and diesel engines, should not be underestimated. Particular attention is paid to the passenger area, the driver's cab in the locomotive, the sanitary facilities and all technical and underfloor areas.

Our subsidiary WAGNER Rail, an expert in fire protection in rail vehicles, develops special solutions for these applications in the field of fire detection, combined with systems for fire extinguishing. Extinguishing methods based on extinguishing gases and aerosols or targeted fire extinguishing with water mist are used - individually planned for the respective area of application.

RISK ANALYSIS

Numerous fire risks in rail transport

In addition to a large number of electrical components and systems, fires also frequently occur in the area of switchgear or engine rooms with electric and diesel engines. Another factor that should not be underestimated is the human factor: human error, failure or vandalism can cause fires.

PROTECTION GOALS

Saving lives and protecting assets

  • Protection of staff and passengers
  • Protection of vehicles and equipment from fire-related damage caused by smoke, soot and extinguishing water
  • Ensuring permanent operational readiness
  • Prevention of consequential damage and damage to image
  • Protection of the environment

BETTER SOLUTIONS IN FIRE PROTECTION

Reach your destination safely with reliable fire protection

Detecting fires as early as possible is of immense importance in rail transportation for two reasons: First, personal safety and therefore evacuation as early as possible in the event of an emergency is paramount. Secondly, you want to keep fire-related damage to your vehicles and thus to your fixed assets as low as possible in order to guarantee your operational capability at all times.

Our TITANUS® early fire detection system detects even the smallest quantities of smoke particles in the early phase of a fire (pyrolysis) and thus before open flames develop. The fire parameters, smoke and temperature, in the protected areas are monitored by a wide range of automatic detectors. Our innovative TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors have proven themselves for years in numerous applications in the railroad sector. They are used in combination with a fire alarm control panel, but can also be implemented as a stand-alone solution. Our aspirating smoke detectors are characterized by a high immunity to false alarms and are therefore particularly suitable for use in the passenger area of trains.

Automatic fire extinguishing plays a key role

Based on the current national and international standards and guidelines as well as the requirements of the operators, we at WAGNER generally recommend the installation of automatic fire extinguishing systems in addition to fire detection systems.

Typical areas of protection are:

  • Sleeping and couchette wagons
  • Passenger compartments
  • Other passenger areas

When selecting a suitable extinguishing system, we primarily consider the requirements of the respective protected area and distinguish between areas with and without passenger traffic. For example, water mist extinguishing technology is used exclusively in passenger compartments in order to avoid endangering people with extinguishing gases. Further advantages of using water mist extinguishing technology are the limitation of the spread of a fire to the next stop and the containment of smoke development, so that people present can be brought to safety.

Gas extinguishing systems and aerosol extinguishing for use in enclosed areas

We protect enclosed areas such as control and switch cabinets, as well as electrical systems in underfloor areas and locomotives with risk-appropriate gas extinguishing systems. We typically use natural extinguishing gases such as nitrogen. By introducing nitrogen into the protected area, we reduce the oxygen concentration and thus prevent the fire from starting and spreading. We do it completely residue-free and non-destructive.

In conjunction with the earliest possible fire detection, the use of gas extinguishing technology enables the rapid, reliable and residue-free extinguishing of an incipient fire. The extinguishing agent does not pose a risk to electrical systems. As modular systems, gas extinguishing systems are designed according to the size of the areas to be protected.

Aerosol systems are ideal for use in technical containers and power packs. When triggered, these extinguishing systems release fine aerosols that can safely extinguish a fire in the enclosed area. Aerosol systems are used where gas extinguishing systems with cylinders in the container are too expensive.

CERTIFICATIONS

Our fire protection systems comply with existing standards and guidelines

If required, the systems can be certified in accordance with these.

The purpose of the European standard EN 45545-2 is to formulate conditions and measures to limit the spread of fire. The standard includes the definition of requirements for the fire behavior of materials and components used in rolling stock.

European standard for electronic devices used in rolling stock. The standard covers aspects of these electronic devices, including temperature, humidity, shock, vibration, EMC, power supply and other parameters.

The European standard EN 54 is not mandatory for railroad applications. Compliance with the requirements of the applicable EN 54 standards certifies the high quality of the fire detection function.

The SIL level is used to assess components and systems with regard to the reliability of safety functions. Hardware is SIL2 certified according to EN50129. Software can be certified up to SIL2 in accordance with EN50128.

Design of the fire protection systems according to ARGE with subsequent testing of the system according to ARGE (project-specific).
